Post-Mortem of Election 2006

Peace Finally, after this 2 week of ~~wayanging~~, I mean aggressive campaigning from all parties.

Even before the Nomination Day, you can get to see that everything is starting to boil.

This year ~~wayanging~~, I mean campaigning is circling around two main issues as I see it. It's not about lift upgrading and not about health care. It's about Chee Soon Juan and James Gomez.

This year Election is circling around three buzzwords : Defamation, Imcumbent, Mandate.

It's no surprise that PAP had won this year election. It just how the whole thing progressed.

Right from the start of this whole episode, SDP had been slapped with Defamatory Charge from PAP's PM Lee & SM Lee. They are required to print apologies ad on the papers and pay off charges made against them. One by one SDP's member break rank to apologise, totally destroyed they campaigning strategy and attention because of this and they had suffered their worst defeat ever.

WP, though having a strong line-up of candidates this year, also have some problems of their own. James Gomez caused an uproar in the PAP camp because of his filing of the minority certificate incident. Personally, I feel that this episode had cause PAP some of their vote in the camp of Aljunied.

Another interesting point that I had notice is the campaigning of the SMC of Potong Pasir and Hougang. PAP had been aggressive in their "attacks". Their even route in SM Goh's help. With Upgrading project worth S$80 million and $100 million respectively. But as the result shows, they "carrot" don't move the "donkey" at all.

But overall, the status quo remains as 2001. PAP still have the strong mandate they want, though opposition, especially WP seems stronger this time.
